Made a guide for my friends over at CAAS, Figured I would share with rasoc just incase someone is interested. I made this pretty much as a sticky step by step for them, and I am just copying and pasting over here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over my years I've drilled a lot of tanks, the only ones I've ever broke were 10gallons, and they are extreamly hard to drill due to the thin glass.

I wouldn't suggest drilling 10g aquariums or smaller due to the fact the glass is so thin, I have done it before and even with a sucessful hole drilled, during plumbing the glass broke because i accidently hit the bulkhead and theres just not enough glass to make it strong. If I were in great need of a 10g or smaller tank that needed drilling. I would silicone extra 1/16 glass on the front and the back. and drill through the pieces as well as the tank.

the thicker the glass the easier it is to drill and take care of.

most aquariums these days come with tempered bottoms. You can not drill tempered glass, Doing so will ruin the whole glass panel. Before drilling make sure your glass isn't tempered before drilling. this can be done by a tapping sound check, internet forums, or contacting the manufacturer.

What you will need to sucessfully drill a glass aquarium

1) Diamond Hole Saw for the size bulkhead you need. A 3/4'' hole saw will not fit a 3/4'' bulk head. Determining the size hole saw you will need is pretty easy, either by mesuring the bulkhead, reading online by a simple google search, or, I get my hole saws on ebay and they say what size bulk head they fit.

I purchase the holesaws on ebay for about 15$ bucks. They seem to of worked fine for me in the past and able to cut several holes out with just one. I would say in total I have bout about 5 holesaws from ebay and have not been disapointed. Typing in. Aquarium Hole Saw yeilded me plenty of sizes that said what bulkheads they were for.

2) Wood Template. You will need a wooden template cut out with a wood hole saw the size of the outside diameter of the glass holesaw. For mine I cut it out with a wood holesaw, then sanded the inside until the glass dimond bit holesaw fit inside it. The reason for this is to hold the dimond bit holesaw in place while drilling. Wood holesaws have a pilot bit in the center that keep it in place, but theres no way you can really have a piliot bit for drilling glass.

3) Clamps. you will need some C clamps or vise grips, or duct tape to hold the template in place, ive done it with tape but clamps are much better and more assuring.

4) water hose

5) old towl or cloth.

6) Electric Drill.

7) PPE. Personal protective equipment, saftey glasses, gloves if you want to eliminate the possibility of getting cut when handling the glass hole you just cut out.

Here I have 2 different diamond hole saws and templates, notice for a 1'' bulkhead you will need a 1 3/4'' hole, and 1.5'' bulkhead a 2 3/8'' hole. Also monster engergy drinks, as most know I'm a monsterholic.

the 2 3/8'' hole saw ill be using.

Brought the tank outside, layed it down with the back of it up. I layed it on some rubber matts. used the clamps to secure the template. one clamp I was using i used a small piece of 1x4 on the inside of the tank to llet the clamp have more surfact to attatch too. This would be the way to do it if you only have metal clamps or a small profile clamping end to spread out the pressure.

Taped a water hose onto the template where its running right into the hole I will be cutting, no need for full blast water just a trickle is fine. This keeps the bit running cool along with exporting the glass dust out of the template hole.

Something crucial that wasnt in the above picture was the Towel. I layed a towel down inside the tank to catch the glass piece as it falls down. If you do not do this you might break the front side of the glass, as a 2 3/8 diameter 3/8'' thick piece of glass has got some destructive power falling 18 inches.

Now its time to start drilling. place the bit inside the template and run the drill at a high speed, DO NOT press down on the drill, do not aply pressre. Just let the bit work and the wieght of the drill be the only downwards pressure.

Also, turn the drill down to a very low torque setting incase it grabs it will stop turning, if you don't do this it might be OK or it might turn out terrible, its just good practice to set the torque low.

I drilled for about 20-30seconds then let up for a a few seconds, let the bit cool and glass dust wash away.

now you got a good cut in the glass, a lot of people remove the template at this time but honestly I see no harm in keeping it on. I've never removed the template during a cut.

after drilling for a while and getting deeper and deeper, its crucial that your still applying no downwards force, after about 10minutes of cutting I finally got some water falling through the hole, which means Im super close. At this point, with my left hand applied some upwards force on the drill to take even less pressure off the hole.

this is the point where the glass is getting thin, and pressure can cause a big nasty break. I spent 10minutes getting it to this point drilling, and probably another 10minutes drilling the remaining slither left because I was taking a lot of the drill weight away from the down force.

Finally, we have a fall through! gentely remove the drill from the hole.

Note, there will be a small amount of chipping on the hole and it is completly normal. This is due to the final bit of glass holding the hole breaking but if done right, should be small and barley anything.

Pat yourself on the back and enjoy your new drilled aquarium!

I was just thinking about meetings and I thought would throw out some ideas of my own

1) Tank tour- have we done a tank tour lately? That was one of my favorite things
2) Acrylic- I don't know how feasible this is, but could we have a meeting working with acrylic and how to make things? maybe something small like a frag rack or maybe even a little bigger like a pico tank, but if we got the acrylic donated or cheap maybe someone could teach this?
3) Fragging demonstrations- Having someone come in with large colonies and people get hands on experience fragging. More interesting corals would be beneficial i.e. Acans, blastos, or something that is a little harder to frag than an Acro colony.
4) Chemistry- I would love for someone to go over economical ways of keeping Calc, Alk, Magnesium, etc. up and the best test kits and methods. This has always been a problem for me!
5) Do we still do raffles after the meeting? It seems like those were always a good incentive especially if the raffle item was big and posted on the boards
6) FOWLR/Predator tanks- A lot of people are reed keepers but what got me into the hobby was a good old FOWLR tank. Maybe hit on conversion from FOWLR to reef?
7) DIY- Some of the coolest things I learn are about how people DIY things and CHEAP! Maybe a presentation of the best DIY's out there to improve your aquarium? Maybe a demonstration?

These are all just ideas I came up with off the top of my head, maybe I will think of more as the day goes on, I will post them if I do!
